For centuries, European travelers braved the waters of the Arabian Sea to uncover the treasures of the Indian Subcontinent. Many such travelers observed that the region of Kutch was the finest and most abundant source of folk embroidery in the world. The beauty of Kutch embroidery has been inspired by an ancient South Asian tradition – dowry. From an early age, tribal women in the Kutch region start to create and collect embroidered master-pieces for their own marriage. Hand-embroidered textiles, such as the Tribes of Kutch bedspread, they later use to embellish their husbands’ homes. |
